Barnardos - Keeping Safe

A safeguarding programme with Barnardos - a script-led animation built from real lived experience, alongside a print/illustrated toolkit for partners and stakeholders.

The Project

A children's participation project, where the voices and experiences of children and young people could be heard through animation, illustrations and other media. These could then be used by professionals and service providers to gain a better understanding of these real, lived experiences.

The Brief

Barnardos wanted us to create a series of animations and other materials that could be used by professionals and other young people to understand the experience of living with violence and abuse.

The Outcome

So far we have created three animations, all based on the real, lived experiences of children, young people and parents who have suffered violence and abuse: one aimed at children and teenagers, one aimed at the parents of infants, and one focussing on safety tips children can use at home. Alongside this, we have created a variety of posters, brochures and other media.

Keeping Safe is a safeguarding programme built with Barnardos, working directly with young people who have lived experience of violence in the home. The output covers a script-led animation and a series of print/illustrated assets.

Animation

Working with young people with real, lived experience of violence in the home, we created a script and video demonstrating the tips they would give others to ensure safety in a similar situation. Working with a range of stakeholders, including DVA charities, An Garda Síochána, Emergency Response call operators, and Project Leaders from Barnardos, we created a composite narrative that told a clear story but remained close to the experiences of the young people we were working with.
